Polynesian Music

Image
When looking back over the semester and seeing the many countries and different types of music we learned about, I realized we have not yet talked about Polynesian culture. I personally find Polynesia an interesting and beautiful place filled with culture, which is the reason why I decided to research and expand more on Polynesian music.      To start off, we'll look into what Polynesia is. It is defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, which is made up hundreds of islands scattered over the central and southern Pacific Ocean. The culture is very fascinating and the people who inhabit these islands are called Polynesians. Despite there being so many islands, Polynesians all set out from one home, meaning that the culture has remained similar between all of the islands.      That takes us into the background and history of Polynesian music. Early Polynesian music was made of simple vocal music to further elaborate chant song...

Music and Family

When thinking about my family and music I immediately thought of my mom to interview. She has always played different types of music around me and my sisters that has opened my eyes to many different genres. She is 50 years old and grew up in the 80's in South Florida. Me: What was your favorite music growing up and what were your favorite artists? Lynn: Punk rock and classic rock were my favorite genres and my favorite artists were The Sex Pistols, The Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, The Butthole Surfers, Anthrax, The Clash and pre Joshua Tree U2.  Me: Where did you listen to music? Lynn: In my 1986 Ford Escort because I had a Pioneer sound system. I also listened to music in my parents station wagon, at work (Chicken Unlimited and Orange Julius), parties and on the beach.  Me: Did your parents like the music you listened to? Lynn: They were indifferent, they didn't care. They had other issues to worry about.  Me: Did you go to any concerts? Lynn: Yes, my first concert was...

American Roots Music

Indie-Rock music is a subgenre of music that originated in America from the 1970s-1980s. The word 'indie' is derived from 'independent', which was a way to describe record labels that operated independently from mainstream record companies. It is derived from post-punk and is a new take on alternative rock. But, when looking at indie rock today, we see a wide range of subgenres and styles. The main reason as to why I chose this particular genre is because I enjoy listening to artists and songs with from this genre.     To start off, we should take a deeper dive into the history and emergence of indie-rock. It started in the late 1960's and early 70's when well known bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones started to break away from commercial records to create their own independent labels. Then, in the 1970s, when punk rock emerged, bands in this genre were assigned to independent labels. When post-punk grew, indie rock slowly emerged. Post-...

Music and Gender

Image
Gender plays a big role in a majority of different types of things. From occupations, athletics, politics and more, there is no doubt that gender has an effect. With that being said, when looking into music and how it interacts with gender we can see a strong connection.      For example, we see these gender roles in music in America pretty much every day. Women are known to play more soft and quiet music and are found to sing in genres like pop and country. On the other hand, men are more likely to sing and create music in the rock and rap industry. This also is seen in musical instruments as well. The trumpet is more dominated by men, while women play more of the violin, flute and piano. Not only is this seen in actual music, but we see a correlation with gender in the producer music industry as well. According to Statista, men dominate the producer industry with 97% compared to 2.8% of producers being female. This plays a major role in music because...

Music and Rituals

Music has a big impact on all types of ceremonies, as no ceremony that you attend will be completely quiet. Personally, my favorite ceremony to attend, with the best music, is my church's Christmas Eve night service. I love Christmas and I love the music that is played during the season. It brings me joy and brings everyone together. During this service there is a variety of music and instruments being played, but everyone sings together from the hymns. Typically the service starts with a loud and triumphant song that introduces the choir, the different types of instruments being played, the pastor, and the acolytes... etc. There's a trumpet, bells, piano, many people singing and more. Usually this song is "Joy to the World" and it is very joyful and loud, which gets the sermon started. Throughout the service there's a change in songs such as "Silent Night" which happens during the candlelight service, and is very different from "Joy to the Wor...

Hi, my name is Anna Cary but I go by AC. I am from Prosperity, South Carolina and I play basketball here at Converse. I am majoring in healthcare administration, and I have a dog named Maui. A little bit about me is that I like to have fun and laugh, and I enjoy cooking.  My first go to piece of music is anything by Zach Bryan, but particularly "Traveling Man". This is my favorite song by him and I like it because it makes me feel happy. I like to listen to his music when I'm in my car or just in my room relaxing or getting ready for something. This is my current go-to because he's my favorite artist and I can listen to his music when I'm in any mood, happy, sad, mad or whatever. I really like to sing this song when it's playing loudly. I particularly like the lyrics of the chorus that say "we're all running from the things inside".  Traveling Man One song that is personally meaningful to me is "All Too Well" by Taylor Swift. This song ...
