Music and Family
When thinking about my family and music I immediately thought of my mom to interview. She has always played different types of music around me and my sisters that has opened my eyes to many different genres. She is 50 years old and grew up in the 80's in South Florida.
Me: What was your favorite music growing up and what were your favorite artists?
Lynn: Punk rock and classic rock were my favorite genres and my favorite artists were The Sex Pistols, The Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, The Butthole Surfers, Anthrax, The Clash and pre Joshua Tree U2.
Me: Where did you listen to music?
Lynn: In my 1986 Ford Escort because I had a Pioneer sound system. I also listened to music in my parents station wagon, at work (Chicken Unlimited and Orange Julius), parties and on the beach.
Me: Did your parents like the music you listened to?
Lynn: They were indifferent, they didn't care. They had other issues to worry about.
Me: Did you go to any concerts?
Lynn: Yes, my first concert was Tears for Fears in 8th grade at the Palm Beach auditorium. I also saw Aerosmith, Great White, Black Crowes, U2, and Bon Jovi.
Me: What influenced how you found your music?
Lynn: My friends and I liked music that was different, not like what everyone else liked. Billy was my coworker from Chicken Unlimited and he also influenced my music, but I also had an influence on my friends music choices as well.
Me: What kind of music did you have at your wedding?
Lynn: We had a DJ that played the music that was popular. I got married in a small town so there was country and I didn't really listen to a lot of country at the time.
Me: What is the purpose of music?
Lynn: It takes you to another place and allows you to express yourself. It can put you in different moods and help you forget what may be going on in your life and allows you to reset. I can't have quiet I have to have music.
Me: What was the technology that you listened to music on?
Lynn: Cassette tapes and a Walkman were really the only ways to listen to music. Cassette tapes only had one album on each tape and you couldn't skip songs like you can now, you had to fast forward your way through. But when I got to college CD's had just come out so then I upgraded to those.
Me: Did your musical taste change as you got older?
Lynn: Not too much, I still like alternative music, but I also like other things now. I still don't care for top hits like everyone else tends to listen to, but I do listen to a more variety of genres. I like island and beachy music but my favorite genre is still alternative/punk.
Very cool that your mom talked about punk rock for her favorite music growing up! I also saw that your mom has been to a U2 concert. My mom is a huge fan of U2, they have great music in my opinion, so it was interesting to read about that!

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the dialogue. I personally think it makes the blog more interesting. I never heard of a walkman until your mom mentioned it. As I was reading blogs I noticed that almost nobody's parents or the person they interviewed changed their style of music.

ReplyDeletePretty cool that your mom's favorite music genre is punk rock. I don't hear much about it in todays generation as hiphop and rap are more popular. I also found it cool that your mom cant sit in silence and that she must have music playing.
ReplyDeleteI thought your blog was great! I liked how there were many bands and artists that I have never heard of before that seem very interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt was so interesting to learn that your mom likes punk rock music. Very cool! My dad likes that music too and listens to some of the bands you mentioned!
